Two suspects were taken into custody today (October 14) by Pooneryn police over the death of a woman who was found dead near Sangupitty bridge yesterday.
The body was recovered along the bridge and a postmortem inquiry was conducted. The inquiry revealed injuries in the head and burning marks on the body as well. The cause of death was declared as suffocation caused by drowning.
Preliminary investigations by police revealed that victim could have been burned before being dumped into the sea.
The victim, mother of two children from Karainagar, Jaffna left for Vavuniya to attend the event of a family relative. The jewelry worth 10 sovereign gold, worn by the victim was also missing, police said.
Further investigations are underway by police over the incident with the arrest of two individuals today. (Northeastern Monitor/ October 14/2025)
