A Buddhist monk claimed that a senior official attached to the Department of Archeology planted objects that would suggest Buddhism related links in Kurunthurmalai and surrounding areas of Mullaithivu in the past in order to acquire those lands under the department.
Chief Incumbent of Mihintale Raja Maha Viharaya, Ven. Walahahengunawewe Dhammaratana Thera lodged a complaint to Criminal Investigation Department (CID) alleging that the senior official named Mr Jayathilaka brought archeological objects in several bags and planted around the disputed Kurunthurmalai area and surrounding paddy fields.
He lodged a written complaint on July 21 to the department urging them to take action against the official. The Chief monk shared the copy of the letter with ITAK MP Shanakaiyan Rasamanickam in Mihintale.
Located in the remote region of Mullaithivu, an illegal Buddhist shrine was erected in Kurunthurmalai and nearby paddy lands were acquired by Department of Archeology and certain individuals past despite protests staged by Tamil farmers in the past. (Northeastern Monitor/ November 1/2025)
