Out of 54 major and minor agrarian tanks, 51 of them reached their maximum capacity due to heavy downpours Northern province continued to receive till today evening (November 29), Chief Irrigation Engineer T. Rajagopu said.
All fourteen sluice gates of Iranaimadhu tank in Kilinochchi were opened to release excessive water inflow and currently water level is 39’ 11’. Earlier today it was recorded at 40’ 3’.
In order ensure the safety of sulfide gates and bunds, temporary exit canals were opened in case of emergency to remove excessive water inflow.
Barriers were broken in Velimaruthamadu Kulam and Kooraikulam in Mannar. Pambaimadu, Vavunikkulam, Mahakachchakodiya kulam, Iranaimahdu and Muththaiyankaddu also saw severe damages to its breakers due to heavy water inflow. (Northeastern Monitor/November 29/2025)
