At least 153 persons were killed and 191 individuals reported missing across the country as cyclone Ditwah is exiting the island via northern province today.
Most of the victims - over 50 individuals were from Central province of Kandy and Nuwera Eliya due to landslides and floods.
In North, where heavy downpours commenced since Wednesday (26) and continued till today evening (29). By yesterday, Vavuniya district received over 140 mm of rainfall within the day causing flooding and major and minor tanks received significant water within a short span of time.
In Kilinochchi where major Iranaimadu agrarian tank is located, all twelve sluice gates were opened due to inflow of high volume of water. In order to control the water inflow, temporary breaks were opened in the tank bunds to remove water.
Thousands of families living in low lying land of Murasumottai, Kandawalai, Uriyaan and Thattuvankoddi were evacuated for their safety by government authorities.
In Jaffna, 19919 persons from 6228 families are affected due to floods and currently sheltered in temporary camps setupped in schools and community centers. (Northeastern Monitor/ November 29/2025)
