Thousands turn up to remember their war dead amidst bad weather

 

Thousands gathered at Kanakapuram Thuyilum Islam to mark the Maveerar Day where relatives of of war dead including fallen cadres remember their loved ones. 


Thousands of Tamil speaking people in North and East turned up at war cemeteries (Thuyilum Ilams) and public spaces today (November 27) to collectively remember their war dead on Maveerar Naal (Heroes’ Day) despite ongoing bad weather conditions in the two provinces. 


Both provinces are experiencing heavy rainfall coupled with strong winds due to depression in Bay of Bengal that is expected to turn into a cyclone today (November 27). 


Collective commemorative events were held in war cemeteries and public spaces in Kilinochchi, Mannar, Jaffna, Kilinochchi and Vavuniya today evening where a close relative of a fallen soldier of Liberation Tigers of Thamil Eelam (LTTE) lighting the oil lamp at 6.05 pm. 


In East, commemorative events were low due to heavy rainfall in the last two days where several regions are flooded with thousands of people displaced and currently housed at temporary shelters. Three deaths were reported in Batticaloa when a car with three individuals on board drowned after slipped into a canal.


According to Disaster Management Centre (DMC), at least 31 persons were killed and over ten reported missing due to bad weather conditions across the country. (Northeastern Monitor/ November 27/2025)
