At least two deaths reported due to rat fever (Leptospirosis) in the wake of recent flood situation in Jaffna, according to the office of Regional Director of Health Services (RDHS).
The two deaths were reported from Karaivetty and Chavakachcheri MoH divisions last week, said RDHS Dr. A. Ketheesawaran while pointing out that eight deaths reported last year due to rat fever in Jaffna alone as well.
In the post flooding period, RDHS stressed the those who are engaged in farming have to take precautions when engaged in flooding water in their agrarian lands.
Meanwhile Ministry of Health and Mass Media also issued a notice yesterday urging the public affected by the recent flood disaster contact the RDHS or the Public Health Inspector in their area to obtain free prophylactic treatment (Doxycycline) against Rat Fever.
The Ministry said that it is very important to receive this preventive treatment against leptospirosis in view of the recent flooding.
Therefore, Public Health Inspectors and other health officials are currently distributing Doxycycline prophylaxis to the public based on the identified needs. (Northeastern Monitor/ December 2/2025)
