Grama Sevakas protest condemning assault on GS by NPP MP in Kilinochchi

Officials including Grama Sevaks engaged in rescue operations of locals trapped in floods in Kandawalai, Kilinochchi last week.

A group of Grama Sevaks (GS) from Velanai staged a protest in front of Pradeshiya Sabha today condemning the alleged assault on a GS in Paranathan by a Jaffna district Parliamentarian representing National Peoples’ Power (NPP).

Wearing black ribbons, the GSs alleged they staged protest despite emergency regulations are currently in effect in order to ensure justice for the affected fellow GS.

They also warned that if no proper steps were taken against the incident, they will have to concierge union action in future.

The particular incident happened in Paranthan, Kilinochchi when the NPP MP tried to distribute cooked meal parcels brought from outside to flood relied centers in North.

The GS insisted that respective procedure should be followed to ensure the hygienic quality of the food through Public Health Inspectors (PHI) but the MP arbitrarily tried to distribute them.

During the verbal argument, the GS claimed he was assaulted by the MP. A police complaint was also lodged over the intent. (Northeastern Monitor/ December 1/2025)
