Northern fishermen demand Govt to prevent Tamil Nadu bottom trawlers

Northern fishermen unions staged a massive protest in Jaffna demanding authorities to take stern action against Tamil Nadu based bottom trawlers.

Northern Fishermen Federation staged a massive protest in front of Jaffna District Secretariat demanding government authorities to take immediate steps to prevent frequent illegal bottom trawling by Tamil Nadu (TN) fishermen in Northern sea.

Over 2000 fisherfolk from five district level fisheries cooperative unions took part in the protest where they alleged TN  bottom trawlers frequently enter into Sri Lankan waters and engaged in bottom trawling at the expense of their livelihood.

They also alleged that TN trawlers caused damaged millions of rupees worth fishing nets  and equipment in recent past and no compensation was provided by government authorities so far.

The protest commenced from Jaffna District Secretariat and fishermen marched towards District Fisheries  Department in Pannnai where they handed over petition.

The Northern fishermen sought a meeting with President Anura Kumara Dissanayake on the issue alleging that all other relevant government authorities failed to take stern action against TN trawlers.  (Northeastern Monitor / December 12/2025)
