Youth killed in accident, kin donate organs: Kidneys of 27-year-old transplanted


The medical team that carried out the surgery for transplantation of the youth’s two kidneys paid their last respects following the surgery. 


The family of a 27 year-old youth who suffered injuries in a road accident earlier this month and was declared brain-dead decided to donate his organs today.


Raviraj Rajkiran met a fatal accident on December 8 in Vavuniya and was admitted to Vavuniya District hospital. Later he was transferred at Jaffna Teaching Hospital (JTH)  for further treatment. 


Following further medical treatment and CT scan investigations, it was determined that he suffered severe internal bleeding and was treated at Intensive Care Unit s (ICU) for several days. 


Despite continuous treatment and attempts made by the dedicated medial team, his condition got worsened later he was declared brain dead. 


When the family was told of this tragic news by doctors, they came forward to donate his two kidneys, said Director of JTH Dr. T. Sathiyamoorthy. 


A special medical team carried out the surgery and transplanted the two kidneys to the two needy individuals successfully. 


Following the surgery, the medical team paid their last respects to late Rajkiran- saluting for his family’s decision to donate his organs. 


‘ Even though the youth’s life came to a tragic end, his family’s humanity paved the way to save two other needy Individuals today. This shows the humility of the family and we pray for his soul to rest in peace,’ said Dr Sathiyamoorthy in a Facebook post on the incident. (Northeastern Monitor / December 12/2025)
