Heavy rains are expected in several districts of North and Eastern provinces this week starting from tomorrow (January 7) onwards till January 11 due to a depression that emerged in Bay of Bengal, weather forecasters warned.
Due to the air circulation has strengthened into a depression, Northern, Eastern, Uva, Central, North Central, Sabaragamuwa and Southern provinces are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall from 05.01.2026 to 12.01.2026, Prof Nagamuthu Piratheeparajah of University of Jaffna said.
In particular, from 06.01.2026 to 11.01.2026, many parts of the above-mentioned provinces are likely to receive very heavy rainfall. Most importantly, from 06.01.2026 to 11.01.2026, the Northern, Eastern and Uva provinces are likely to receive very heavy rainfall.
Meanwhile, other provinces of Sri Lanka are also likely to receive moderate to slightly heavy rainfall during this period. Due to the continuous rainfall, landslide disasters may occur in many parts of the Central and Uva provinces. Therefore, it is necessary for the people to be very vigilant in this regard, he noted.
It is advisable for the reservoir managers of the Northern, Eastern, Central and North Central provinces to be more cautious regarding the heavy rainfall associated with this depression. Meanwhile, the northern, eastern, southeastern and southern sea areas of Sri Lanka will be in a turbulent condition from 06.01.2026 onward, so it is necessary for fishermen to be very careful when going to sea.
Meanwhile, those who have gone for deepsea fishing activities in the Eastern and Southeastern sea areas in multi day boats should also be careful regarding this depression.
