Russian envoy to Sri Lanka visit North after decades


Russian ambassador to Sri Lanka Levan Dzhgaryan met with Northern Governor N. Vedhanayahan today.


Russian ambassador to Sri Lanka Levan Dzhagaryan met with Northern Governor N. Vedhanayahan today at the Governor’s Secretariat in Jaffna.


This is the first time a Russian envoy based in Colombo visited North in recent decades.   


During the meeting, Russian envoy stressed that provincial tourism bureau should take steps to attract Russian tourists who make up a significant portion of Sri Lanka’s total foreign tourists arrivals. 


Governor Vedhanayahan assured that North is secured placed for any foreign tourists to visit but many Russian tourists are not aware of region’s tourist friendly places. 


He also urged envoy to encourage Russian investors to invest in North as well. 


Russian envoy Dzhagaryan also stressed that Russian embassy in Sri Lanka offers scholarships for Sri Lankan students through its cultural arm and Northern students also should apply in the future to make use of the opportunity. (Northeastern Monitor/ January 4/2026)
