The annual Maha Shivarathri religious prayers were held in. Vedukkunaari Aadhilingeswarar Kovil in Vabduniya North yesterday (February 15).
As one of the traditional Tamil Saiva worshiping religious shrine for lord Shiva, located deep in Vavuniya forest, previous Maha Shivarathri celebrations were disrupted by police in the past.
Earlier Vanni District ITAK MP T. Raviharan urged police to allow Hindu devotees to mark the religious festival peacefully without being to subject to them any intimidation activities.
Apisheka pooja prayers were performed to Lingeswarwar on top of the mountain and cultural and art events were also held in view of the festival for Lord Shiva.
Local devotees who took part in the religious prayers urged authorities to provide road facilities to access the site in the forest region which comes under the purview of Department of Forest. (Northeastern Monitor/ February 16/2026)
