Over 40 percent of childbirths in Jaffna are through Caesarian : Report





Over forty percentage of childbirths recorded in Jaffna district in last ten years are carried out through Caesarian surgeries, according to the statistics from Jaffna District Secretariat. 


Based on childbirth data for the last ten years in the district, over 5000 child births are recorded in the district every year. The management of Jaffna Teaching Hospital handed over the statistics report to the District Secretariat as required.


Accordingly, in 2021, 3512 normal deliveries were recorded while 2099 Caesarian births were recorded. In 2022, normal deliveries of 3262 recorded while 2141 Caesarian births were recorded. 


In 2023, 3077 normal deliveries recorded while 2141 Caesarian childbirths recorded in the district, according to the data. 


Local health experts said delayed marriages among young couples play a crucial role in lower childbirth rate compared to other districts in the country as well. (By N. Lohathayalan/ Northeastern Monitor/ February 15/2026)
