The shooting incident in Allaipitty, Jaffna where a 17 year old driver was killed in police shooting for failing to stop his vehicle.

Leader of Tamil National People’s’ Alliance Kajendrakumar Ponnambalam MP alleged that the recent incident of 17 year old being shot dead by police is a result of misuse of powers under emergency regulations which are currently enforce.

Addressing the media after visiting scene in Allaipiddy where the youth was shot dead by police for failing to stop the van he was driving, the MP asked  how can justice and truth can be ensured when culprits are acting as arbitrators .

“ Police cannot justify the killing of the youth under any circumstances given the post war situation where normalcy is ensured. Police cannot justify take steps to stop the vehicle but cannot shoot and kill the driver,” the MP said.

The MP also raised concerns on the cow dung that was found inside the vehicle since police suspected the van could have been used for smuggling livestock from islands.

‘There was a polythene bag with cow dung was found around 50 meters from the van. We suspect that the cow dung was planted as evidence following shooting” the MP said.

Ponnambalam MP reiterated that police cannot carry out an impartial investigation into the incident since police is blamed to have shot and killed the young driver.  (Northeastern Monitor/ February 11/2026)
