A 17 year old youth was killed in Allaipitty, Jaffna early this morning (February 10) when police opened fire on a van he was driving that failed to stop, police said.
Two other persons who were inside the van were taken into custody as well. The victim is identified as 17 year old Albino Arul Payas from Vaddukottai, Jaffna. The incident occurred on Jaffna- Kayts road near Allaipitty junction near police post.
Police said in a statement that the police personnel who were stationed in the post opened fire when the vehicle did not stop the vehicle therefore, police opened fire.
The injured youth was admitted to hospital but later pronounced dead.
However, the family of the victim said that the youth was working as a driver without driving license due to his family’s poor situation. They claimed that the youth were transporting persons for harvester related work in Jaffna. (Northeastern Monitor/ February 10/2026)
