Excavation activities commenced at suspected Kurukkalmadam massgrave site in Batticalao since Monday (30) onwards under the judicial purview of Kaluwanchikudi Magistrate courts.
This is the first time excavation process commenced following judicial orders following complaints unlike in other mass graves where human remains were found earlier and followed by comprehensive excavation activities.
Under the judicial oversight of Kaluwanchikudi Magistrate T. Piratheepan, eleven member team consisting of both judicial and medical professionals are engaged in the excavation process at the site where it is suspected over 150 individuals were massacred and buried some thirty years ago.
Based on a complaint lodged by a local alleging Muslim devotees who returned to Katankudy after performing their Haj prayers were massacred and buried in the spot, the Court ordered excavation process to be commenced following preliminary investigations.(Northeastern Monitor/ April 1/2026)
