Seasonal migratory flamingos are currently visiting Jaffna lagoon and surrounding coastal areas currently. With the ongoing migratory season for the birds, large flock of flamingos were seen in Velanai, Mandaithivu and Kayts areas.

Here are some of the spectacular images taken by bird watcher Dr. Valarmathy Ambalavanar in the same area of Velanai. The flamingos were seen close to the road. Others are of pelicans, spoonbill (white birds in a group).

Local environmentalists and bird watching enthusiasts in the region urged authorities to protect the natural habitat of Jaffna lagoon in the wake of reports to carry out massive infrastructure development activities including a proposed International Cricket Stadium in environmentally sensitive island of Mandaithivu where migratory birds visit annually.
