Three individuals were taken into custody by Tharmapuram police in Kilinochchi over an incident of selling a two year old girl to a third party for Ra 50,000.
Three suspects including the girl’s step father and step mother were taken into custody by police. Another woman who agreed to buy the girl was also arrested by police as well.
The girl’s step father and mother told police they decided to sell the girl due to poverty situation in their household. A written agreement between the two parties on the monetary transaction was also recovered by police.
Tharmapuram police is conducting further investigation over the incident as they suspects are remained in police custody. The girl was recovered by police and currently placed under police protection. (Northeastern Monitor/ April 27/2026)
