A massive fire erupted at the drug store at Jaffna Teaching hospital destroyed millions worth medicine and pharmaceutical products today morning, hospital Director Dr T. Saththiyamoorthi said.
The fire erupted early hours of today (May 9) where local tri forces personnel and fire brigade officers responded swiftly to bring down the fire under control.
According to hospital authorities, it is suspected electricity leakage could have to the fire but Jaffna police is currently carrying out investigations over the incident.
Northern Governor N. Vedhanayahan visited the scene today morning and directed officials to take relevant steps to ensure drugs and medicine supply to hospital is secured for patients.
Despite the fire damage to the drug store of the hospital, Dr Saththiyamoorthi said steps have been taken to ensure smooth distribution of drugs for patients in wards and for OPD by scouring required medicines from internal drugs stores and regional and provincial drugs stores.
