Sirakukal Amaiyam, a youth-led collective dedicated to addressing educational inequalities in Sri Lanka, has formally petitioned the University Grants Commission (UGC) to implement urgent reforms to the current university admissions timeline.
The collective has identified a critical administrative disconnect that is unfairly penalizing thousands of applicants across the island. While the official UGC deadline for general university admissions is set for May 19, 2026, several leading universities are closing applications for mandatory aptitude and practical tests weeks earlier.
Identified Discrepancies:
Sirakukal Amaiyam is a youth-led collective in Sri Lanka working toward educational equity, student rights, and systemic reforms to ensure that marginalized voices are heard in the national education discourse.
According to the proposal submitted by Sirakukal Amaiyam, the following deadlines create a significant conflict:
University of Moratuwa: Applications for Architecture, Design, Landscape Architecture, and Fashion Design close on May 6, 2026.
University of Jaffna: Applications for Physical Education and Fine Arts close on May 7, 2026.
Eastern University: Applications for Fine Arts close on May 13, 2026.
The "Deadline Trap"
"This creates a ‘deadline trap’ for students," the statement reads. "A student who is still finalizing their degree preferences in accordance with the national May 19 deadline may find themselves automatically disqualified from specialized programs because the individual university's deadline has already passed unnoticed."
Sirakukal Amaiyam warns that this lack of synchronization disproportionately impacts students from rural and marginalized communities. These students often face delayed access to information, limited internet connectivity, and a lack of formal career guidance, making them more vulnerable to missing these early, uncoordinated windows.
Proposed Reforms
To ensure procedural fairness and equal access to higher education, the collective has proposed a policy shift:
All university aptitude and practical test applications must remain open for at least seven (7) days after the official national UGC application deadline.
This proposal has been formally forwarded to the Chairman of the UGC, the Prime Minister and Minister of Education, the Ministry of Education, the Presidential Secretariat, and UNESCO Sri Lanka.
Sirakukal Amaiyam emphasizes that aligning university-level deadlines with the
national timeline is not merely a logistical fix, but a necessary step in protecting the educational aspirations and rights of every Sri Lankan student. (Northeastern Monitor/ May 9/2026)
