Mullivaikaal Rememrance Week commenced

Devotees were given Mullivaikaal porridge on Monday at Selvasannity Murugan temple as part of ongoing efforts to mark Mullivaikaal Genocide week.

The week long Mullivaikaal rememberance week commenced yesterday (May 11) with several community events held to remember thousands of innocent civilians who were massacred during the final phases of war in 2009.

A youth group at Thondaimanaaru Selvasannithy Murugan temple distributed porridge - recalling the days where trapped civilians who were languishing to secure food amidst heavy shelling in the weeks of May seventeen years ago.

Political parties, youth groups and community organizations have also organized similar events to collectively remember the plight of Tamil peoples who were trapped in Mullivaikaal.

At Sannithy temple, devotees and locals took part in the event. (Northeastern Monitor/ May 12/2026)
