Protest in Kilinochchi against detention of youth singer

A protest was staged in Kilinochchi today (June 6) condemning the arrest of Tamil youth singer Sangeethshan who was arrested over performing songs related to Tamil struggle and detained under Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA). 

Youths, civil society representatives and public took part in the protest in front of old Kachcheri building demanding government to stop prosecuting Tamil youths under notorious PTA and ensure the right of Tamil citizens. 

The protesters held pla cards that read “ Let the rule of law equal”, “ Repeal PTA now”, ‘NPP Govt should ensure rights of Tamil people” etc. 

Meanwhile, the youth singer spent his birthday in custody yesterday (June5). 

Earlier the youth was arrested by Chavakachcheri police for performing Tamil struggle related songs in a temple festival. (Northeastern Monitor/June 6/2026)
