Point Pedro Magistrate Court issued an interim order yesterday (July 23) against moves to declare open statues remembering Tamil leaders Selvarajah Yogachandran alias Kuttimani and Nadarsa Thangathurai alias Thangathurai in Valvettithurai area.
The move to commemorate leaders of Tamil Eelam Liberation Organization (TELO) was put on hold by courts while marking 43th year anniversary of 1983 riots at Welikada prisons where the militant leaders were killed by mobs, assisted by prisons guards.
The interim ban was issued till August 4.
Earlier, steps were taken to mark the commemorative day with opening of statue. An individual called T. Suresh who was involved in organizing event was arrested by Valvettithurai police and later granted bail as well.
Senior lawyers N. Srikantha and V. Manivannan appeared in the court to make their submissions as well.
The court also ordered to temporarily halt the construction process as well. (Northeastern Monitor/July 23/2026)
