Protest in front of Jaffna Uni demanding accountability over allegations of sexual harassment by senior academic staff


Protesters at the entrance of University of Jaffna today demanding accountability from university administration over sexual harassment complaints lodged against senior academic staff. 


A protest was staged in front of University of Jaffna entrance today (July 9) demanding accountability and fair probe into allegations leveled by students against senior academic staff on sexual harassment charges. 


The protest, organized by an organization called People’s Movement against Sexual Violence was attended by fellows students, women led groups and civil society personnel holding pla cards calling for fair independent probe. 


Protesters held slogans that read:” Do we have to lose integrity to gain edition.”, “ Why UGC is silent on the issue?,” We need independent probe, and faster accountability process”.


The protest came in the wake of recent allegations leveled by students against two professors at the university alleging misconduct and sexual harassment. One of the professors filed a legal action at Point Pedro Magistrate Court under Online Safety Act (OSA) as well.  


The university administration had already commenced disciplinary investigation over the incidents against two of its senior academic staff in the university following complaints lodged by students. 



Meanwhile, the Students Union of Faculty of Arts said in a statement that the union was not involved in organizing the protest but stressed “there are certain elements trying to discredit senior academic staff and university as whole for various purposes as well. ” (Northeastern Monitor/ July 9/2026)
