Relatives of victims and youths took part in the commemorative event at the memorial site constructed near the church in July 9.

The 31st year anniversary of Navaly St Peter’s Church massacre was held at the church  on Thursday (July 9) where 147 civilians were killed and over 350 injured due to Air Force strike on July 9,  1995.

Among the victims were children, women, pregnant ladies and elders ho sought shelter as they were displaced. The roof top of the church collapsed due to bombing leaving dozens being killed inside the church and leaving hundreds injured.

As wartime displaced refugees sheltered in the church and nearby Sri Kathirgama Murugan, Navaly, at least thirteen aerial bombs were dropped by Air Force planes on Jaffna peninsula as part of their ‘Leap Forward’ military campaign.

Led by parish priest, relatives of victims, those who witnessed the attacks and youths took part in the commemorative ceremony.

Even after 31 years passed, Tamil people have collectively called for accountability over this heinous crime but so far no individuals were brought before Justice. (Northeastern Monitor/ July 11/ 2026)
