Tamil journalists demand justice for past killings of fellow journalists

Tamil journalists based in Jaffna staged protest demanding justice for past killings of fellow journalists and urged government to ensure media freedom to report without any oppression . 

A group of journalists based in Jaffna staged a protest in Friday (July 31) in front of Jaffna District Secretariat demanding justice for the killings of Tamil journalists who were killed in the past. 

The meeting, which was staged as Deputy Minister of Mass Media Kaushalya Ariyarahne was visiting the district to chair a workshop for local journalists at the District Secretariat. 

During the meeting with fellow journalists who took part in the workshop, the Deputy Minister was urged that National People’s Power (NPP) government should probe killings of Tamils journalists as promised during election campaign period. 

The journalists also pointed out in most of the cases, both security forces and armed militant groups that were active in the region were reportedly involved in those killings. Therefore, the journalists claimed, investigations were halted b pay successive governments. (Northeastern Monitor/August 1/2026)
