Senior Tamil journalist and former Editor of Yarl Thinakkural newspaper Aarumugarasa Sabesan passed away in Canada yesterday (July 29) following a brief illness, his family said. He was 47.
During the wartime period, he worked as a courageous journalist reporting on human rights violations and killings in the region despite personnel threats. He also served as a lecturer at Media Studies Unit of the University of Jaffna and later become editor of Yarl Thinakkuaral, a leading local regional newspaper based in Jaffna.
He also served as the inaugural President of Jaffna Press Club following its inception in 2001. In 2022, he migrated to Canada. He passed away today at the hospital following a brief illness. (Northeastern Monitor/July 30/2026)
