“The Long Road to Justice” conference by relatives of disappeared underway in Jaffna

 

Relatives of enforced disappeared persons staged a protest today ahead of international conference in Jaffna. 

The international conference on Tamil mothers’ pursuit of truth, justice and accountability for enforced disappearances “The Long Road to Justice” commenced today (August 30) in Jaffna. 

Hundreds of relatives of enforced disappeared persons, university students, representatives of civil society and common public took part in the protest march that commenced in front of Veerasingham hall and reached auditorium of Thanthai Selva memorial centre. 

Armed with fire sticks, relatives of enforced disappeared persons demanded for justice and truth about what happened to their loved ones even after seventeen years passed since end of war. 

Ana Lorena Delgadillo Pérez, independent expert and member of the UN Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances is taking part in the conference as chief guest. Representatives of UN office in Colombo, Amnesty International and International Committee of Red Cross Society (ICRC) are also attending the conference. (Northeastern Monitor/August 30/2026)
