Case filed to open suspected mass grave sites in Mandathivu

Victims of the Mandaithivu massacre of 31 Tamil fishermen, 39 years at sea.

Kayts Magistrate Court heard a case filed by a group of eye witnesses and a Catholic priest seeking the Court's directive to open suspected mass grave sites in Mandaithivu island, Jaffna, yesterday (17).

The petition alleged that those who were made to disappear in 1991 following military operations and paramilitary groups in and around Jaffna islands were dumped in three domestic wells, including one located in a parish church premises.

The petitioners urged the court to conduct magisterial inquiries into the suspected mass grave sites by opening them and ordering excavation activities.

When the Court heard the petition yesterday, the Kayts police informed the Court that it did not have resources or capabilities to undertake the excavation activities. Therefore, the case was vested with the Crime Prevention Unit of the Jaffna police.

Kayts Magistrate instructed the Jaffna police to submit a report on the matter to the Court on November 12.  (Northeastern Monitor/ September 18/2025)
