A TNPF political activist is in a heated argument over the entry to Minister R. Chandrasekar at Thileepan memorial today in Jaffna. |
Minister of Fisheries R. Chandrasekar was barred from entering the premises of Thiyagi Thileepan memorial in Nallur, Jaffna this evening by a group of activists belonged to a Tamil nationalist party.
Tamil National Peoples' Front (TNPF) is at the forefront organizing the commemorative events at the memorial despite calls by other political parties to mark the event collectively.
When Minister Chandrasekar and his team tried to enter to premises to commemorate late Thileepan who died for Tamil cause 38 years ago, TNPF supporters refused today evening. A tense situation also erupted in the scene following arguments but the Minister and team was turned away later.
Known by the nom de guerre Thileepan, Rasaiah Parthipan, one time Jaffna Commander of Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) died while on fast unto death campaign in 1987 after twelve days of continuous protest campaign demanding Tamil peoples' rights and urged India to keep its assurances it made at that time.
The Thileepan commemorative event commenced on September 15 and will continue for twelve days- marking the days late Thileepan was on fast unto death campaign. Several remembrance events are currently underway in various places across North and East remembering late Thileepan and his ultimate sacrifice to Tamil cause.
