Crime incidents on the rise in North: District Secretaries

 

Northern Governor N. Vedanayahan met with five District Secretaries of Northern province this week. 


The number of crime incidents being reported in the five districts of North are rising without adequate preventive steps from the police, District Secretaries of the province alleged during a meeting with Governor N. Vedanayahan this week. 


District Secretaries observed that there has been an increase pattern of crime incidents being reported in their respective districts ranging from abuse of drug substances, gang violence, illegal sand mining, smuggling of livestock etc.


In Jaffna, the number of drug abuse incidents are increasing in recent times along with attacks related to violent gangs. The District Secretaries also pointed out that police are not proactively taking steps to control the situation. 


In Kilinochchi and Mullaithivu, ongoing illegal sand mining coupled with product of illicit arrack in the rural areas have become a critical issue. 

 

To prevent sand mining and other illegal activities in the region, the district secretaries urged police to put police posts in the identified areas in order to prevent them in future. (Northeastern Monitor / October 12/2025)
