CID secures 72 hour remand custody to detain EPDP’s Douglas Devananda


The Gampaha Magistrate Court today granted permission to detain former Minister and Secretary General of Eelam Peoples’ Democratic Party (EPDP) for seventy two hours over an incident where the official weapon given to him by the Army in 2001 falls into the hands of notorious underworld gang in Colombo



The former Minister was produced before the court today (December 27) where CID submitted that it needs more time to carry out investigations into how weapon- a pistol reached the Makandura Madesh gang in 2019. The weapon was issued in 2001 by Army to the Mr Devananda for his personal safety. 


The CID informed the court that serial number of the weapon that was found from underworld group indicate that the weapon was given to former Minister in 2001. 


Devananda was asked to appear before CID yesterday where he was arrested when he failed to explain how the weapon issued for his security ended up with underworld gang. (Northeastern Monitor / December 27/2025)
