Heavy rains are expected in several parts of the country including North and Eastern provinces from December 9 till 13, a weather forecasting expert warned.
Issuing a message today (December 7), Dr N. Pratheeparajah attached to Department of Geography at University of Jaffna said at least 50mm rainfall can be expected in many parts of the country due to a fresh depression that emerged in Bay of Bengal.
The weather forecast shared by Dr PRatheeparaja as follows:
07.12.2025 Sunday 8.00 PM
Awareness post - related to events such as heavy rainfall and associated landslides.

A new air circulation has formed in the southeast Bay of Bengal near the Andaman Islands. This is associated with very strong humid easterly winds.
An atmospheric disturbance is already observed in the southwestern part of Sri Lanka.
This air circulation is expected to move westwards in the next 48 hours and approach the southern Bay of Bengal area south of Sri Lanka.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thus, many parts of Sri Lanka are likely to receive heavy rains from 09.12.2025 to 13.12.2025.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
In particular, the Northern, Eastern, North Central, Central, Southern, Uva, North Western, Sabaragamuwa and Western provinces of Sri Lanka are likely to receive heavy rains.
Many parts of Sri Lanka have already received heavy rains and the land has reached its saturation point.
Therefore, if more than 50 mm of rain is received in those areas continuously, there is a possibility of flooding in those areas. Therefore, it is necessary for people in the low-lying areas mentioned above (09.12.2025 to 13.12.2025) to be vigilant regarding flood disasters.
It is also expected that this heavy rain may trigger landslides in some parts of the hilly areas. Therefore, all dear Sri Lankans must be vigilant regarding heavy rains and associated landslides from 09.12.2025 to 13.12.2025.
It is best for the sectoral authorities to investigate this matter and alert the people based on the advice of the relevant departments.
Please share this information so that it reaches all the people of the Central, Uva, Sabaragamuwa, Northwestern and Southern provinces.
As I have already mentioned, it is better to maintain the water level of the reservoirs of the Northern, Eastern, North Central and Central provinces a little lower.

It is also noteworthy that a cyclonic circulation is likely to form again in the Southeast Bay of Bengal on 15.12.2025.
