MP Shanakiyan demands probe on death of youth in police custody

 



Batticalao district ITAK Parliamentarian Shanakiyan Rasamanickam demanded an independent probe into death of a youth who died while in police custody at Batticalao police. 


The 23 year old victim named Sivanesarasa Rinoshan was found dead while detained at police custody. He was accused by police of involving theft of bicycles in the area and was taken into custody on December 2. 


Relatives who saw him for the last time in the late evening (2) claimed, that when he was produced in courts on the following day (3), he was seemed to assaulted by police in custody. 


He was remanded till December 5 and later transferred to Batticalao hospital where he was pronounced dead. Relatives of victim alleged that the cause of his death was due to the torture and assault carried out by police officers while in custody. Police denied any wrongdoing and claimed that the victim was addicted to drugs. 


The Batticalao district MP demanded police to make the report from Judicial Medical Officer over the death public and committing minor offense like robbery of bicycle cannot be justified for custodial killings by police. 


He also stressed that there were similar incidents in the where detainees were found dead in police custody but no proper investigations were carried out on the cause of deaths. (Northeastern Monitor / December 8/2025)
