Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of police recorded statements from Vice Chancellor of University of Jaffna and Registrar over recent incident of hoisting black flag within the premises of the university on Independence day (February 4).
A CID team visited the university yesterday (March 10) to record the statements from the officials following the directives issued by University Grants Commission instructed university to carry out investigation over the incident.
Accordingly, UoJ administration appointed a Committee to investigate the matter which identified 30 students who were identified to be directly involved over the incident.
During the investigations carried out by the Committee among students, it was pointed out that incident was orchestrated to indicate that Tamil speaking people mark the day - February 4 as Black Day since political, social and economical rights of Tamil speaking minority communities are yet to be recognized and granted by the state.
In this background, the CID team recorded statements from officials over three hours. University student community condemned the move by police entering university premises and conducting probe inside the university. (Northeastern Monitor/ March 11/ 2026)
