Excavations at suspected Gurukkalmadam mass grave site to commence on March 30

Kaluwanchukudi Magistrate Court ordered to commence excavation at suspected Kurukkalmadam mass grave site in Batticalao on March 30.

When the case was taken up before Judge R. Pradeepan at the Kaluwanchikudi Magistrate’s Court this week, the Court was informed of delay in securing financial allocation for the excavation work. 

The court also ordered relevant authorities including police officials at Kaluwanchikudi police to ensure necessary arrangements in place. 

It is suspected that individuals who were traveling to Kattankudy via Kalmunai after completing the holy Hajj pilgrimage in 1990 were allegedly stopped by armed men and massacred. Their relatives alleged that their loved ones are buried in the mass grave site. (Northeastern Monitor/ March 14/2026)
