An event to commemorate 45th year anniversary of the burning of iconic Jaffna Public Library was held today at the library (June 1).
45 years ago, on June 1, a group of politically affliated influential persons who arrived from South engaged in the act of setting fire to the cultural wealth of Tamil speaking people burning thousands of books and precious ola leaves written archived Tamil literatures texts.
Led by Chief Librarian, staff attached to the library, senior state officials and Commissioner of Jaffna Municipal Council attended the event.
A reader who witnessed the burning of the library shared his lived experience of using the library in his young age and how it became of the cultural symbol of Tamil people in North.
