Tamil youth singer detained under PTA

A Tamil youth singer who sang a revolutionary song at a temple festival in Jaffna was detained under Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) after police filed charges of reviving terrorism in the country.

The singer - Ganesakumar Sangeethan known by his stage name ‘Hiphop Sangee’ was arrested last week after performing at a musical event held in Navafkuli, Chavakachcheri.

The Crime Prevention Unit of Jaffna police arrested the singer under sections of PTA alleging that the youth tried to revive Liberation of Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) through his songs.

When the youth was produced before Chavakachcheri Magistrate Court yesterday ( June4) Attorney at Law K. Sayanthan appeared on behalf of him and argued why he shouldn’t be detain under PTA clauses.

However, Magistrate granted permission to detain him since police informed the court that further investigations are underway.

Meanwhile, M. A. Sumanthiran PC and his legal team visited the youth in prison yesterday.

Sumanthiran PC said the youth cannot be held under PTA and moves are underway to file a Fundamental Rights petition against his detention at Supreme Court today (5).(Northeastern Monitor/ June 5/ 2026)
